Wine Club: NW Spain!

Wine Club has arrived! We have two beautiful wines to showcase this month, both from Northwestern Spain. Since we can’t actually go to Spain right now, we thought we’d have a little “Spaincation” with you through these wines. After all, we often say that Wine Club is a way to travel through a bottle!

We focus this month on two well known, though an under the radar, regions: Ribeira Sacra, and Bierzo. 

Believe it or not, Ribeira Sacra is actually a mis-translation! The ancient Romans founded the area and named it Roboira Sacrata, which means “Sacred Oak Grove.” Ribeira Sacra means “Sacred Shore,” or “Sacred Riverside.” Just another example of history in a bottle!

They focus on three main grapes in the region: Mencía (red), Albariño (white), and Godello (white). The blend we’ve chosen, by Virxen Dos Remedios, is 60% Godello, 20% Albariño, and 20% Treixadura. Flinty and crisp, with tropical fruit notes and mountain water freshness, it will transport you to this beautiful region of South-central Galicia.

Now on to Bierzo. Located right next to Ribeira Sacra to the Northeast, vintners here make gorgeous wines from red wines from Mencía and Alicante Bouschet, and whites from Godello, Doña Blanca, Palomino, and Malvasía. We’ve chosen a Mencía, because we absolutely adore this grape. Super versatile, it can produce young fresh reds on the Burgundy side of things, or richer and inkier reds capable of maturing for years. The one in your Wine Club bag is by Vinos Guerra. Medium bodied with an initial burst of ripe red fruit notes and herbal hints, this will pair wonderfully with anything fresh off the grill.

Getting a hold of your Wine Club this month will be different than normal, as we’ve postponed the Release Parties until further notice. Please allow us to reach out to you individually through email and phone to find the best time to have you either come pick up the bag here curbside, or set up delivery. We are requesting that if you would like us to deliver, that you consider coupling it with a larger order to save trips. Stay healthy, stay positive!
