Tabali Experience - Valle de Limari
Back in 2020 our co-founder Pedro had the pleasure to visit one of his favorite producers in Chile, Tabalí. The winery sits within the river basin of the Limarí river, in proximity to the Pacific Ocean. Back in 1993, Tabalí was the first producer to plant vines in this oasis in the middle of a semi-desert region 400 miles north of the capital of Santiago de Chile.
This was Pedro’s last trip to South America, just before the Pandemia made us stay at home. Upon arrival, Pedro thought he The main winery sits on a gravity fed ditch with an open air facility which camouflages very well with the natural landscape of the Limari Valley.
This area of Chile is the only viticultural area in the country that has limestone soils, locally alled “Vetas Blancas”. This layer of chalk soils gives the wines a special character full of minerals and refreshing acidity that helps develop complexity with time in the bottle.
They bottle a unique range of true Chilean terroir wines such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere and Cabernet Franc. Tabalí produces wines with great personality due to its one-of-a-kind microclimate in Limarí with sharp diurnal range (warm days / cold nights) and salty air caressing the vines. In Maipo, they produce world class Bordeaux style wines.
Pedro was greeted by Hector Rojas, chief viticulturist that’s been in charge of the Tabalí estates (Limarí and Maipo Valley) for over a decade. Hector has a deep understanding of precision to safegaurd the identity of Limarí Valley. One thing Hector said really stuck w/ Pedro: “the wines are made in the vineyards, if you take care of the soil and the health of the vines, you will have quality grapes to ferment.”
Please make sure you visit both locations to get to know these amazing wines!
