Wine Club: Argentine Underground!
The first thing that comes to mind when you think wine from Argentina? Malbec? That’s for good reason! However, there’s so much more! Over the years, we’ve discovered many “underground” styles from Argentina. With this edition of Wine Club, we’d like to introduce you to two bottles that we think demonstrate a new wave of vinos Argentinos!
The first bottle, an old vine Semillón called “Hulk” from Via Revolucionaria, has a gorgeous golden hue and enticing citrus and floral aromas. The texture of the wine is superb, simultaneously mouth watering, clean, and rich. Look for flavors of meyer lemon, honeysuckle, pears, and herbs.
The brainchild of Matias Michelini, Via Revolucionaria sits in the Uco Valley in Tupungato, Mendoza. Matias strives to make experimental wines that express the terroir of this cooler climate. Though each offering is different, all his wines share common traits. Each is from a single vineyard, fermented with naturally occurring yeast on the grape skins, and unique.
The second bottle, we can almost guarantee, is made from a grape that you have not tried before. Called Cereza, it exists only in Argentina, a naturally occurring hybrid between two of the varietals that have the longest history in Argentina: Criolla Chica, and Muscatel de Alejandria. The wine, called “Cara Sucia” by Durigutti has notes of fresh fruits, a welcoming structure provided by fine tannins, with hints of minerals and rose petals on the finish. A rustic yet modern style of winemaking that leads to amazing drinkability and sense of place.
