Susana Balbo
A pioneer, a builder, a matriarch, an entrepreneur, an inspiration. We have many things to thank Susana Balbo for. Without her vision and creativity, Torrontés would likely still be a regional grape in northern Argentina that few people took seriously. The floral aromas, tropical flavors, and refreshing texture that she first coaxed out of the variety in the mid eighties have found fans all over the world. Gracias, Susana!
What we find most inspirational about Susana is her never-give-up attitude. It’s easy to look at someone with astounding success and forget just how hard they worked to reach that level. Susana fought hard, remained committed to quality and honesty in her wines, and eventually had the pleasure of working with her children to build Susana Balbo Wines, her very own internationally renowned bodega that makes wines according to her vision.
María Morchio Giol
María’s great-grandparents came from Italy and started a winery in Mendoza. Today, she emphasizes the importance of the unsung work in the vineyard. Born and raised on the family farm, she considers herself an agricultural engineer first and foremost.
The wines María shepherds truly represent the palace where she grows. She allows the fermentation to start naturally from the yeast living on the grapes.
There are many reasons María inspires us, but what really stands out is her love of the process of winemaking. One of her favorite moments each harvest is tasting the grapes and imagining not only the wines they will become, but the challenges she and her team will face along the journey. Perspective is so important!
