Some Summertime Rum Drinks!
It’s hot. You need some cooling cocktails to make it through the dog days of a DC summer. Here are our spins on three classic white rum cocktails.
Dry Passion Fruit Daiquiri
If you’ve only ever had the frozen, refreshing (but ultra sweet) version of a daiquiri served in the big tulip glasses with a little umbrella, you’ll like this change of pace.
2 oz Don Q Cristal
½ a lime (add more if you want it even drier/tarter)
Lime wedge (garnish)
Splash of Contratto Red Bitter Liqueur
¼ oz Inca’s Food Passion Fruit Nectar
Ice
Muddler
Shaker
Coupe glass
Muddle the lime in the shaker, then add all ingredients plus ice. Shake for 20 seconds, strain into coupe glass and garnish with lime wedge.
Classic Mojito
We’re big fans of taking the extra time to muddle. Especially when used on citrus, it adds a slightly bitter undertone to the cocktail that primes you for the rest of the flavors.
1.5 oz
8-10 mint leaves
Club soda
½ a lime
Lime wheel
Ice
1 or 2 sugar cube (to taste)
Bar mixing glass
Collins glass
Muddler
Fine strainer
Muddle the lime, mint (save 1 or sprig for garnish), and sugarcubes in the mixing glass until the sugar has mostly dissolved. Add a splash of water and fill mixing glass with ice. Stir for 20-30 seconds. Strain into collins glass over ice. Finish to top of glass with soda water, lightly stir, garnish with mint and lime wheel, and serve.
Piña Colada
For such a famous and common cocktail, it’s incredible how many different versions are out there. Note that ours is for a full sized blender, so this serves at least 4 drinks. Also note the “Piña” comes first in “Piña Colada.”
1 whole pineapple, cored, de-skinned and chopped
4 oz Don Q Cristal
3 oz coconut cream - this is very important
1 oz coconut water
1 oz concentrated pineapple juice - also very import
1 oz triple sec or orange liqueur
A lot of ice
How you actually make this happen depends on the size and power of your blender. If it seems like to much for one blenderfull, then cut the recipe in half and do it batches.
Important: blend all ingredients except ice first, then put into a separate container. When you want to make a fresh drink, blend ice and mixture together until you reach the texture you prefer. Garnish with a small slice of pineapple.
Stay cool out there, and let us know if you try any of these!
